This is a very special mushroom shaped box made out of Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) with Interior Live Oak (Quercus wislizenii) cap. Persimmon is a true ebony species, the only native American ebony. It is heavy, hard and polishes well. The super hard wood is a favorite material for golf clubs. I found this plain wood works well as a mushroom stalk. What special about this mushroom is the oak cap. The radial rays of oak mimics the gills of the mushroom perfectly. A california native oak, this species has very dense wood. The problem is, live oak likes to twist and turn as it grows, so a nice section with centered pit is not common. Also, the wood tend to crack along the radial rays, all the way into the center when dried. I like to retain a ring of bark as accent, but bark also tends to fall off when dried too quickly. So, I have to baby these logs, dried them in a bag, open and close the bag repeatedly along the way. These are a few technical problems that make mushrooms a seasonal offering in my store.
