This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Redwood Burl (Sequoia sempervivens) with Black Walnut (Juglans negra) cap.  Redwood is the state tree of California and can grow to giant proportion.   The species holds the world record for the tallest tree and can live for more than a thousand year, as its Latin name mean "Forever Living".   The timber is widely used for constructions due to it's nice, warm tone and resistance to insect and decay, but the burly wood (which also holds the world record for the largest burl) is something truely special. This piece is made from a lace burl, the highest grade of Redwood burl, choked full of figure.  Capped with a highly figured walnut for added visual interest.
