This is a very special mushroom shaped box made out of Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) stall and Interior Live Oak (Quercus wislizenii) cap. A California native, this live oak has dense, light color wood. What's fun about the oak is it's radial rays. When turned with the pit centered, the rays pattern looks like gills of the mushroom. The problem is, live oak likes to twist and turn as it grows, so a nice section with centered pit is not common. Also, the wood tend to crack along the radial rays, all the way into the center when dried. I like to retain a ring of bark as accent, but bark also tends to fall off when dried too quickly. So, i have to baby these logs, dried them in a bag, open and close the bag repeatedly along the way. These are a few technical problems that make mushrooms a seasonal offering in my store. The larger the diameter of the cap, the rarer it is. Native to North Eastern US, Flowering Dogwood is the state tree of Missouri and Virginia. The mass blooming of Dogwood in Spring is a sight to remember. The wood has a nice pink tint with subtle coloration and is very hard and dense. Hard enough that it was used to make golf club, mallet and butcher block, among other things. This mushroom looks delicious!
