This is a round box made out of Black Walnut Burl (Juglans negra) with Carob (Ceratonia siliqua) cap. Carob is also know as St John's Bread, as John the Baptist was reported to subsist on the edible pod of this tree while wandering in the wilderness. Native to the Mediterranean and the Middle East, the Carob tree play a role in the region's culture. The "carat" unit of measurement was derived from the name Carob, as the ancient used to weight gold and gems against the weight of the Carob seed. In our time, the extract from the pod of this tree is used to make chocolate substitute. This pieces came from a nice hardwood piece with multicolor streaks.
The all-wood threaded box is a rare commodity. The screw-on cap is what make this box extra special. It can be used to hold pills and small valuables...The flat profile fits unobtrusively in a purse or pocket for people on the go, and the screw cap ensures that your content is secured. I don't make flat boxes very often. Since there is very little space to maneuver the threaded cap, flat boxes require very careful matching of the threads for a smooth, spin-on/spin-off operation.
