This is a tiny mushroom shaped box made out of Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) cap with American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) stalk.  The majestic Coast Live Oak is common here in my area. The tree branches twist and turn forming a spectacular dendritic canopy, but because of that its very tight grain wood is not utilized much for anything, except perhaps mushroom caps like what you saw here.  In contrast, the timber from American hornbeam is valued for its dense, strong wood, but it is also not readily available commercially.
