This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Bay Laurel Burl (Umbellularia californica) withChechen (Metopium brownei) cap. From the soil of my California home State, Bay Laurel is commonly seen along creek sides and canyon. A monotypic and endemic species, it even carries "californica" in it's latin name. For some reason, the name switches to Oregon Myrtle when it crosses over to that state. However, it is not a true laurel nor myrtle, just happen to have the spicy aroma. To me, the wood smells so good when turn, but for some, the smell gives them headache, so the tree is also known as Headache Tree. This species was valued by Native Americans as food source and medicine, the leaves had been used as a cure for.. headache, go figure. Today, it is well sought after as a world class tone wood with nice tight grain with a shimmering sheen. But we are looking at the burl here, and what a beauty with eyes, swirls and chatoyancy. The uniquely patterned cap compliments the light beige nut. This is another one I really like!
