This is a very pretty apple shaped box made out of Aromatic Cedar (Juniperus virgiania). Among many of other so called cedars, this species is another cedar-wannabe. It is actually a juniper, but the common name, or misnomer, stuck. The brownish-red heartwood is fragrant, very light and very rot resistance. Moths do not like the aroma from this timber, so it is often used as lining for clothes chests and closets. Yes, this is the cedar that you are familiar with. This wood is light but very fine grain, with nice pinkish color streaks just perfect for another sweet smelling apple! Apple is one of the hardest thing for me to make. I want the grain to match and the bisecting line as tight as possible. A lot of time spent and many half-apple casualties ensue as the result...
Once in a while, I got request for salt shaker, so I have been thinking about that. Here is a new concept for a shaker that will work for any fruit with a small stem. The bottom has a rubber plug for easy filling of the content. The removable stem acts as a plug for the container, so your spice stays dry, and ensures that the small hole does not get encrusted. Pull the stem up, shake out the salt (or whatever finely grounded spice), and plug it up again. If you misplace the stem, any small twig you can find from your garden will do. The stem can also be permanently attached with a small amount of wood glue to turn this apple into a piggy bank type container. This is a cute addition to your kitchen, or gift to your favorite teacher!
