This is a very special mushroom shaped box made out of Red Oak (Quercus rubra) cap with Yoshino Cherry (Prunus yedoensis) stalk.  It's mushroom season here now.  This one is the larger one I managed to grow from my lathe.  It's difficult to find such a big oak branch that can be dried with no splitting.  I like oak for mushroom cap. The radial rays of oak mimics the gills of the mushroom perfectly. The stalk is made from Yoshino Cherry, which is the variety that produces such a spectacular show in Washington D.C. every spring. The old grown wood is as spectacular as the flower with subtle colors and figure.  This is one big saprophyte!
