It is my favorite material for flat boxes.  The dark bottom goes well with any other wood color, it also provide accent and contrast.  Here, Mun was paired with another dark wood with very interesting grain pattern.  Black Palm is the National Tree of Cambodia.  It is one of the palm species with extra dense wood.  Difficult to thread, but well worth the trouble.  I like this one! \u003cbr \/\u003e \u003cbr \/\u003eThe all-wood threaded box is a rare commodity.  The screw-on cap is what make this box extra special. This particular species is native to central China (also known as Chusan Palm) and is cold hardy enough to find it's way into park and garden of the temperate zones.  It has nice fan-shaped fronts with very strong fibers that can be used for weaving strong baskets, sacks, and ropes.  Here, I use the trunk to \"weave\" a bowl.  You can still see all these trong, irridescence fibers in the side grain and end grain.  A ring of betel nut (another of my favorite palm nut for many reasons) was inlayed into the bowl as decorative accent.    I really like the way this one turned out-- both visual and tactile.  The size and shape feel so good in my hands that everytime I pick it up, I don't want to put it down without a dose of good fondling.  The details of the Betel nut are also very captivating. I like both its character and attitude.  Manzanita wood is high on my favorite list.  It is very dense with a beautiful dark red color.  The burl is even more beautiful with dense but subtle figure.   The problem is this wood cracks like crazy, so a nice large piece of Manzanita wood is rare.  The burl can be large, but also fills with crack and voids,  suitable only for artsy pieces with lots of character.  Once in a while, I got my hot hands on a solid burl of this species, and turned it into beautiful acorns like this one.  Walnut is one of the few dark woods from the temperate zone.  The species is common here as orchard trees.  Lucky me! I don't need to go very far to obtain such spectacular timbers . They are tough shrub, well adapted to the salty, partly submmerged environment that few other species can take hold, forming a unique ecosystem.  Their elongated seed pods, actually a living tree, are capable of floating in water for a long time and long distance before taking root.  This piece of mangrove came from the Florida Keys, from permitted clearing of this protected species.  The wood is very fine grain and dense.  However, it is very suseptible to cracking up when dried, thus not often seen utilized in woodworking.  This small vessel showcases the timber with its knots and cracks, which were filled with black resin for added visual interest.
