This is a beautiful lidded vessel made out of Spalted Photinia (Photinia x fraseri) and Wenge (Millettia laurentii). Photinia is one of my favorite wood for turning, the wood is comparable to Boxwood in density, but with a warmer tone. These shrubs never grow very big and is often use as hedges around here. My neighbor did a re-landscaping on their yard and some old growth Photinias has to be removed. I was very lucky to have obtained the wood and give it a second life as lustrous turned items. This box came from the base of an old tree, where the wood has developed spectacular color streaks. The streaky dark Wenge adds accent to the box. The cap is loose fitting and can be lifted with one hand. One of a kind!
