This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Iliahi Sandalwood (Santalum elipticum) with Royal Palm (Roystonea regia) cap. Sandalwood is a parasitic small tree that establishes on the roots of host trees. The oil from the wood has a distinctive, pleasant scent that last. This very expensive oil is used for medicine and perfume. This acorn is perfect for your sniffing pleasure. Sandalwood is not only rare, but tends to crack up like crazy. This is a rather large acorns (and could be the only one) I managed to cut out from the block. Royal palm is a common ornamental palm, but the "wood" is seldom utilized. Due to it's porous, stringy nature, it is the most difficult thing to cut thread with. It took me 4x longer to carefully thread and shape this cap than with another well behaved hardwood. However, the shimmering result is totally worth it. So, once in a while, when I feel up to the challenge...And this one is a true challenge, with a a larger diameter to deal with than my previous attempts. So, here you have it: rare + demanding = ????
