This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Afzelia Burl (Afzelia xylocarpa) with Black Palm (Borassus flabellifer) cap. An extremely beautiful and expensive burl from SE Asia, Afzelia is hard and fine enough to accept threading. It is related to the famed Amboyna burl, but with a lighter reddish-orange tone. The burly grain is nicely figured and lustrous, like gemstone. The black palm cap adds another level of visual complexity to this already striking acorn. Palms are my least favorite "woods" for turning (well, they are not even wood, belonging to the grass family). They shoot out sharp splinters at me, quickly dull my cutting tools, and sometimes just decide to shatter in spite of it. But, its OK! You can misbehave a bit when you're that pretty!
This is a nice box for your valuables. The screw-on cap ensures that your content is secured, good for jewelry, keepsake... Thought the ages, people has given out acorns as a symbol of prosperity and luck. This one is a unique gift for the "hard to give" people on your list!
