This is a very special mushroom shaped box made out of Ivorywood (Calycophyllum multiflorum) with Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) cap. I can not help but smile every time I finish turning one of these mushrooms because they look so cute! The cap is fashioned out of a centered oak branch so the radial rays distribute themselves all around the cap, like the gills of a mushroom. A ring of bark was left as accent. Only once in a while, i can find an oak branch with the pitch almost centered (a rare occurrent for the twisted live oak), of the right size, dried without splitting right through the core, and not full of bug holes. From such a log, a few mushrooms will grow, each with it's own uniqueness. The beige body has some gray streaks mixed in. Ivorywood is such a joy to work with. It is extremely fine grain, as the name implies. I should have worked with it sooner. This mushroom is a bit taller and more angular, the masculine one of the two mushrooms from this wood combination. They look adorable together as a pair. Now, I need to really watch out for those blue Smurfs, they might just decided to move in!
