This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Yoshino Cherry (Prunus × yedoensis) with Scarlet Oak (Quercus coccinea) cap. Yoshino flowering cherry which is the variety that produces such a spectacular show in Washington D.C. every spring. The old grown wood is as spectacular as the flower with subtle colors and figure. Scarlet Oak is also the District of Columbia's official tree symbol. The wood is not often available, since it is not one of the commercial species. As part of my State Trees project, this symbolic and beautiful acorn showcases two beautiful woods with cultural ties to Washington DC.
