This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Ponderosa Pine Burl (Pinus ponderosa) with Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa) cap. Ponderosa pine is is the official state tree of Montana. It is a magnificent species that holds the record for the tallest known pine. I was very fortunate to obtain a piece of it's very rare burl. When I hauled the burl out for cutting, I thought that there was definitely a mistake in labeling. Pine can not be this heavy! But when I cut into it, the fresh pine scent filled the whole workshop. Yes, it is pine alright, but guess what? The burly wood is saturated with pine resin! In fact, this wood is so dense that I can thread it directly instead of using a hardwood insert. There is more: the resulting acorn is translucent in certain part! I did not turn it very thin because I want the piece to hold it's wonderful aroma for a long time, but the translucency is still apparent. The solid black line of bark inclusion make this one unique. If you like the smell of fresh pine, open the cap and take a sniff! Capped with a true rosewood, one with a nice reddish tint and darker streaks, this acorn is truly striking!
A nice box for your valuables. The screw-on cap makes this nature inspired box extra special and ensures that your content is secured, good for jewelry, keepsake... Through the ages, people has given out acorns as symbol of prosperity and luck. This one is a unique gift.
