This is a pretty heart shaped keychain attachment made out of Manzanita burl (Arctostaphylos pungens). Manzanitas are the most picturesque trees around here. The reddish, peeling bark trunks twist and turn, give the tree a weathered look with a lot of character. They grow in abundant here on the hillsides, but all my attemp to grow them in my garden has not been successful. My failure to domesticate this species heighten my appreciation for them. I like both its character and attitude. Manzanita wood is high on my favorite list. It is very dense with a beautiful dark red color. Trouble is the wood does not behave. The twisted trunks are small to begin with, and tend to split like crazy when dried. Thus, a large chunk of dried manzanita wood is a rare commodity. This red heart was fashioned out of the Manzanita burl with subtle pattern.
The heart was cut free-hand and then hand sanded to a smooth, contoured surface, with just an oil/wax finish. It is equipped with antique bronze hardware, ready to dangle. Due to this manual process, each heart is unique. Also due to this manual process, I do not offer hearts very often. It's too much exercise for me with all that sanding and polishing! But I know, a natural, simple, meaningful, unique heart is hard to find, so here is a collection for your enjoyment. It is also good to carry a piece of real wood with you just in case you need to "knock on wood" to prevent jinxing yourself, since nowadays, with all those "alternative" materials, finding a piece of real wood could be a challenge. Great as unique wedding favors, and, of course, it is a perfect gift for that special someone who hold the key to your heart!
