This is a very special mushroom shaped box made out of American Holly (Ilex opaca) withWillow Acacia (Acacia saligna) cap. I found a few oak trimmings on the curbside a while back. The branches I gathered are now dry enough to become mushrooms. Live oak looks awesome as mushroom cap because the gills of the mushroom are already built in with the oak's radial rays. I leave a ring of bark as accent on the rim of the cap. Holly is the whitest wood available commercially, perfect for mushroom stalk! Willow acacia is a very nice ornamental tree. The long, narrow leaves sweep downward like that of a willow. Bright yellow mimosa-like flowers cover the tree in bloom season. The only problem is it litters a lot, dropping it's leaves, flowers, and seeds all over. My sister got tired of mopping up after this tree and one fine day, decided to cut it down. She gave me a few small branches and from those (with the help of my faithful lathe) a brand new species of mushroom sprouted. What a beauty!
