This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Manzanita (Arctostaphylos glauca) with Hawaiian Kou (Cordia subcordata) cap. Manzanita is a beautiful shrub with contorted, red bark branches that grows on the foot hills of California. The wood is exceptionally fine grain but notoriously difficult to dry without checks or splits. One of my favorite wood out of almost 1000 species I have collected. That is, if I can have a piece larger than 1" square to make something out of it. Here is a gigantic acorn in Manzanita's standard. Such a large 3" block of Manzanita wood without crack or defect is a true rarity! The subtly patterned Kou adds contrast and visual interest. Kou is a very beautiful dark wood from Hawaii. In the old day, the whole trunk of this tree was used to carve canoe. It is still a highly sought after wood for making bowl, cooking utensils and high end articles. I really like this one!
A nice box for your valuables. The screw-on cap ensures that your content is secured, good for jewelry, keepsake... Thought the ages, people has given out acorns as a symbol of prosperity and luck. This one is a unique gift.
