This is a unique vessel made out of Redwood Burl (Sequoia sempervivens) with Black Walnut Burl (Juglans negra) cap and Vermiculite inlay. Redwood is the state tree of California and can grow to giant proportion. A stroll in the towering Redwood forest is a memorable experience. The species holds the world record for the tallest tree and can live for more than a thousand year, as its Latin name mean "Forever Living". The timber is widely used for constructions due to it's nice, warm tone and resistance to insect and decay, but the burly wood (which also holds the world record for the largest burl) is something truly special. I have a decent sized piece of this burl and decided to make a large turning to better showcase the dynamic grain. Accented with shimmering vermiculite and a contrasting cap for added effect.
A lidded box is nice, but a threaded box is something special. The screw-on cap ensures that your content is secured. It is a beautiful decorative item as well as functional, and is even large enough to serve as a small urn.
Dimension (largest diameter x height): 5-1/4" x 6-7/8"
PLEASE READ:
-- All wood turned items were hand made and/or hand threaded on a lathe. Hardwood threaded inserts were used for woods that do not accept threading well.
-- The item was sanded to 1200 grid for a mirror finish and sealed with a food-safe varnish, if applicable. For hard, fine grained wood with a natural shine, only wax and oil was applied.
