This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Sea Hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus) with Katalox (Swartzia cubensis) cap. A relative of Blue Mahoe, Sea Hibiscus also have the interesting dusty purple color. The species oftens grow along seashore and is showy with bright yellow blooms. The wood is fine grain, with dark streaks and subtle color variations. It is relatively rare, since it is not a commercial wood. The cap also has a dark purple hue. Katalox is also called Mexican Royal Ebony, a fine hardwood in it's own right. This acorn with it's unique hue and shimmering sheen really confused my camera. The color is very hard to capture accurately. A purple tone acorn, any one?
