This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Striped Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) with Asian Ebony (Diospyros ebonasea) cap. Oh yes, the persimmon! I like to eat them. I also like looking at these trees in winter, so cheerful with dangling orange fruits on bare branches, like it's still in the mood for Treat-or-Trick. If you look at the Latin name of Persimmon (who does? except geeks like me, right?), you will notice that it belongs to the Ebony family. The wood is known as very hard and durable, often used for golf clubs. It is plain yellow in general, except in this particular piece that I am lucky to have. Here, you can see the ebonization of the heartwood, resulting in black streaks. This rare piece must be from a very old tree. Capped with another seriously black ebony species for a compare and contrast exercise.
A nice box for your valuables. The screw-on cap ensures that your content is secured, good for jewelry, keepsake... Thought the ages, people has given out acorns as a symbol of prosperity and luck. This one is a unique gift.
