This is a mini pendant box made out of Gaboon Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) with Australian Black Palm Nut (Normanbya normanbyi) cap. Gaboon ebony is the standard for black in lumber. It has been treasured through the ages for fine articles such as statues found in Egyptian tombs to the fret boards on violins and those black keys on your piano. A very dense wood with specific gravity of 1.2, it sinks in water. The hard and dense wood enabled me to make such a small threaded item. The cap was fashioned out of a rare palm nut with the unique scattered black spots. The stark white cap contrasts with the black wood, but also echoes the dark color with its black pattern for a striking effect. This tiny nut is suspended from a 18" brown leather cord with an antique bronze leaf bail and simple tube spacer beads. I like the delicate look of this design.
This pretty pendant has a tiny secret compartment (~ the size of a pencil eraser) for very small daily pills or memorial keepsake. The screw-on cap ensures that your content is secured, yet can be easily accessed. If you want a permanent seal, apply a very small amount of wood glue to the thread before closing.
Dimension (largest diameter x height): 1/2" x 1", 18" brown leather cord
-- All wood turned items were hand made and/or hand threaded on a lathe. Hardwood threaded inserts were used for woods that do not accept threading well.
-- The item was sanded to 1200 grid for a mirror finish and sealed with a food-safe varnish, if applicable. For hard, fine grained wood with a natural shine, only wax and oil was applied.
