This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of true Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia negra) with Brazilwood (Guilandina echinata) cap. Two most important timbers Brazil has to offer are combined here in this acorn. The commercially extinct Brazilian Rosewood is the highly coveted timbers for guitar making. Brazilwood, also known as Pernambuco, is the wood of choice for violin bows. It is also the tree that give rise to the country of Brazil. This is the only instance when a country was named after a tree. The export of these two woods have been banned. What left now are small stashes here and there, or reclaimed stumps.
I was visiting a small fishing village in Southern Mexico. While we stopped at a small hut on the beach for some fresh coconut juice, I noticed that all the column supporting the hut were made from reddish, knobby tree trunks with lots of character. Impressed, I asked the owner what type of tree those were. She said: Brazil. I asked: spelled like the country Brazil?. She nodded. I wasn't into woods then yet, and thought it was the Brazil Nut tree that produce the familiar nut. Now, I realized that I have seen great treasure that day!
