This is a very special mushroom shaped box made out of Tarata (Pittosporum eugenioides). Also known as Lemonwood, Tarata is an attractive tree, commonly found here as landscaping hedges. It has glossy yellow-green leaves that when crushed emit a strong lemon scent. Sweet-smelling yellow flowers appear in spring and are followed by small green capsules. The wood is very hard, heavy, looks and feels like boxwood. I got a few branches of this otherwise hard to find species from my neighbor, who cut down part of their hedge for a driveway extension. When a branch wood dried without shedding it's bark, I have to incorporate that beautiful bark into the design, so here is another species of mushroom for your enjoyment!
