This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Granadillo Burl (Platymiscum yucatanum) with Cocuswood (Brya ebenus) cap. "Granadillo is a rosewood substitute with a host of different name: Macacauba, Cristobal, Coyote, Macawood, Amazon Rosewood, Nambar, Trebol, Guayacan... Whatever the name, this is top notch timber. However, we are not talking about just plain wood here but an exceedingly rare burl form. I happened on this small piece of burl once, paid a decent sum for just a knife scale sized block, and never seen it for sale anywhere else since. Also known as Granadillo by some source, Cocus wood came from a West Indian tree yielding an extremely fine grade timber. Cocus is a rare species is found in Cuba, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. The heartwood is brownish-yellow to dark brown often with a greenish tinge. It is usually beautifully veined with darker streaks. The wood is hard and heavy. It is well known for its use in woodwinds such as flutes, piccolos, and bagpipes because of its fine and uniform grain, its beautiful coloring and its resonance. So here it is, two rarely seen timbers for your ogling pleasure!
A nice box for your valuables. The screw-on cap makes this nature inspired box extra special and ensures that your content is secured, good for daily pill, jewelry, keepsake... Through the ages, people has given out acorns as a symbol of prosperity and luck. This one is a unique gift.
