This is a beautiful lidded vessel made out of New Zealand Ngaio (Myoporum laetum) with Ancient Kauri (Agathis sp.) cap. According to the Maori legend, this is the shadowy tree you see on the the surface of the moon. This piece was fashioned out of an incredibly figured multi-crotch section. The pattern is subtle but beautiful, just like the surface of the moon. It is also silky smooth and feel great for those who like to fondle their collection (yes, fondling wood is good for your health!). For those who are not familiar with the Kauri, this is the oldest wood in the world, say more than 50,000 years, when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth. It was another case of prehistoric tree falling en-masse into swamps and got sort of mummified. Only native to New Zealands, this unique timber is the national buried treasure. Needless to say, it does not surface very often. This is an interesting combination of two New Zealand species. The cap is loose fitting and can be lifted with one hand. One of a kind!
