This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Cuban Mahogany (Swietenia mahoganii) with Mountain Mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius) cap. The next best thing that comes out of Cuba--beside the Cuban cigar--is Swietenia mahagoni, the "Wood of Kings". It has been among the most prized and valuable timbers since the late 16th century for ship building and high end furnitures. Its reputation as an excellent timber contributed to its being extensively logged to the point of commercial extinction. It is now protected by an international treaty, so what still grows in the Carribean and South Florida can't be cut down. Occationally the timber is available from salvage windfall or dead trees, and pruning of living trees that pose some kind of hazard, with a permit. This piece came from such a salvage effort. On the other hand, Mountain Mahogany is not a true Mahogany species, but and extremely fine and heavy wood that grown locally here in California. The wood is reddish, and that's the only thing that resemble Mahogany. The wood behaves like boxwood instead, very fine grain and turn like a dream. This acorn has no extravagant figure but possesses an elegant simplicity that is very refreshing to behold.
A nice box for your valuables. The screw-on cap ensures that your content is secured, good for jewelry, keepsake... Through the ages, people has given out acorns as a symbol of prosperity and luck. This one is a unique gift.
