This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Desert Ironwood (Olneya tesota) with Cocuswood (Brya ebenus) cap. Desert Ironwood is probably the nicest looking wood from North America, very hard, heavy, polished up to a glassy finish and the swirly grain shimmers like gold. The American Indian believes that the wood will bring luck and good health to the people who carries it. It is one of the only two species considered to be precious timbers from the whole continent of North America (the other one is Texas Ebony). This acorn was made out of a highly figured piece of ironwood. Cocuswood is an extremely rare species is found in Cuba, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. Also called Green, Brown, or West Indian Ebony. The heartwood is brownish-yellow to dark brown often with a greenish tinge. It is usually beautifully veined with darker streaks. The wood is hard and heavy. It is well known for its use in woodwinds such as flutes, piccolos, and bagpipes because of its fine and uniform grain, its beautiful coloring and its resonance. Once popular timber, Cocuswood is now rarely available.
