This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Chittum Burl (Cotinus obovatus) with Tambooti (Spirostachys africanus) cap. Chittum burl is definitely the most interesting and the rarest burl I have ever came across. The figure is incredible, but the shimmering color mix is simple awesome! I have been searching for this wood for a while without sucess. Now I have a piece of burl, but still no decent size blank of wood. The irritating thing is this species is popular as garden shrubs. I pass by them all the time, but nobody ever throw out a piece from trimming. Also know as American Smoketrees, they are handsome thing and certainly not a fire hazard. The "smokes" are fluffy panicles of flowers that bloom over the plant. Just smoke here, no fire. The wood is very pretty with it's yellowish green stripes--much like the Staghorn sumac--and also fluorescence under black light. a yellow dye can be extracted from this bright yellow wood. The brown Tambooti cap adds contrast and matches the dark eyes from the burl. I really like this one!
