LV-1978 Logwood Burl & Brazilian Ebony Acorn Jewelry Box, Pill Box, Trinket Box-SCREW CAP

$ 250.00

This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Logwood Burl (Haematoxylon campechianum) with Brazilian Ebony (Swartzia tomentosa) cap. I had been searching for Logwood for a long time before I found a rare burl form of this wood. Logwood is a species with great economic and historical significant. It was a popular trade timber for the dye it produces. By the late 1500s, logwood was exported from Central America, mainly Belize, into Europe in the form of logs, hence its name. The modern nation of Belize grew from 17th century English logwood logging camps. The flag of Belize bears the image of this tree and two logwood cutters. The dark red wood produce purple, black and grey colors, not red. The main use is for dyeing fibers and also cell tissues for microscopic examination. With the advent of synthetic dyes, the once popular logwood virtually disappears from the hardwood market. I have to search wide and dig deep to find this special piece. Now, the Brazilian Ebony. Not a true ebony species, but is a dark wood and probably the hardest wood I have ever turned! It certainly out done Ebony in the hardness department. It dulled the entire tray of my cutters in a matter of minutes. It took me an extra long time to shape just this acorn cap due to the frequent need to sharpen my tools. So, this is the only acorn from this wood combination. I don't have enough Logwood burl for a second nut of this size, and I have had enough of the Brazilian Ebony!

A nice box for your valuables. The screw-on cap makes this nature inspired box extra special and ensures that your content is secured, good for jewelry, keepsake... Through the ages, people has given out acorns as a symbol of prosperity and luck. This one is a unique gift.
