This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) with Black Walnut Burl (Juglans negra) cap. Here is an acorn made out of something truly special. A California treasure, the giant sequoia is a tree of superlatives: it is the largest living thing (total 2100 tons from a single tree), one of the oldest living thing (3,500+ years old), thickess bark (3+ ft)...and the most magnificent the way it towers over you. For such a humongous tree, it's timber is rarely seen. Due to it's brittleness, the wood is not used as a commercial timber. Here I have a piece of an old grown giant, with it's distinctive red, mature hardwood. It is difficult to thread, requiring an extra stabilization step. However, I was surprise to see it polished up nicely and even has a line of chatoyancy. Capped with a high figured, California grown dark walnut burl, this acorn is a true gift from my home state.
