This is a very special mushroom shaped box made out of American Holly (Illex opaca) with Interior Live Oak (Quercus wislizenii) cap. It was my luck again. I found a pile of oak trimming on the roadside, ready to be ground off into compost, so I rescured a few branches. Hopefully, a few mushrooms will grow out from these branches. A california native oak, this species has dense, light color wood. What's fun about the oak is it's radial rays. When turned with the pit centered, the rays pattern looks like gills of the mushroom. The problem is, live oak likes to twist and turn as it grows, so a nice section with centered pit is not common. Also, the wood tend to crack along the radial rays, all the way into the center when dried. I like to retain a ring of bark as accent, but bark also tends to fall off when dried too quickly. These are a few technical problems that make mushrooms the seasonal offering in my store. Here is the smallest one of the three I managed to make. Looks delicious!
