This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Spalted Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) with Kou (Cordia subcordata) cap. Also known as the Nettletree or Beaverwood, Hackberry is a moderately long-lived hardwood native to North america. The wood has a light yellowish gray to light brown color with yellow streaks and is rather plain looking. However, this wood is pronge to spalting and is well known for it's incredible spalted pattern. Here is a good example of how the timber transforms itself into something spectacular. Capped with Hawaiian Kou, a rare dark wood with lighter streaks. This is one eyecatching acorn.
