This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Hawaii Sandalwood (Santalum paniculatum) with Ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) cap. This is the true Sandalwood with it's pleasant aroma. Sandalwood is a parasitic small tree that establishes on the roots of host trees. The oil from the wood has a distinctive, pleasant scent that are used for medicine and perfume.  To show off this aromatic timber, the inside of this acorn was not sealed with a finish for your sniffing pleasure. Hawaiian sandalwood is among the rarest wood. A piece this large is even harder to come by. This acorn was also cross-cut to show the suble gradation in the wood's colors. The cap is from another rare Hawaiian wood. Ohia is usually the first species to grow on lava field. It is sassociated with Hawaiian legend concerning a pair of lovers and a jealous, bullying Goddess. I love gnarly trees so Ohia still looks smashingly handsome to me in his tree form. A stand of Ohia Lehue in full bloom is a magnificent sight. The wood is hard, heavy and polished up nicely. One rare Hawaiian acorn for the connoisseur.
