This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Buckeye Burl (Aesculus californica) with Nubian Palm Nut (Medemia argun) cap. This unusual acorn looks like it was made from gemstone instead of a wood and a palm nut. Buckeye is a monotypic, local species here in California. At this time, the leaves almost all fall off, leaving a bunch of dangling fruits. The tree itself is weird, the bluish burl wood is unlike any other. The cap is also made from a nut of a weird palm. Nubian palm is native only to the arid desert of Sudan and thought to be extinct until recently. The fruits were found buried in ancient Egyptian tombs, indicating that they must have some important role in ancient culture. The nut is translucent with dark marking, adding an exotic touch to this nut.
