This is a unique wood turned vessel made out of Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina). An ornamental tree native to Eastern North America, Staghorn Sumac is another wood (beside Lignum Vita, Verawood and just a few others) that possesess a greenish color, and a lot more. Looking at this vessel, I can see many shades of green... and yellow... and red... The wood is porous so I had to spend a long time stabilizing and sanding before it became this shimmering rainbow. Staghorn sumac is a source of a natural dye and the wood also fluorest under black light! What a fun and unique thing!
