This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Logwood Burl (Haematoxylon campechianum) with Verawood (Bulnesia sarmientoi) cap. I had been searching for Logwood for a long time before I found this rare burl form of a rare wood. This is a species with great economic and historical significant. Logwood was a popular trade timber for the dye it produces. By the late 1500s, logwood was exported from Central America, mainly Belize, into Europe in the form of logs, hence its name. The modern nation of Belize grew from 17th century English logwood logging camps. The flag of Belize bears the image of this tree and two logwood cutters. The dark red wood produce purple, black and grey colors, not red. The main use is for dyeing fibers and also cell tissues for microscopic examination. With the advent of synthetic dyes, the once popular logwood virtually disappears from the hardwood market. I have to search wide and dig deep to find this special piece. Together with the nice green Verawood, this is the most unusual acorn, color-wise!
A nice box for your valuables. The screw-on cap makes this nature inspired box extra special and ensures that your content is secured. Good for small daily pills, keepsake... Not recommended for long term storage of emergency pill, since I don't know how air/water tight the closure is. Through the ages, people has given out acorns as a symbol of prosperity and luck. This one is a unique gift.
