LV-3137 Chittum Wood Turned Pedestal Vessel, Footed Vase, Wooden Bowl

LV-3137 Chittum Wood Turned Pedestal Vessel, Footed Vase, Wooden Bowl

$ 450.00

This is a unique footed bowl made out of Chittum Root (Cotinus coggygria). Also know as American Smoketrees, but they are certainly not a fire harzard.  The "smokes" are fluffy panicles of flowers that blooms over the plant. The irritating thing is this species is popular as garden shrubs.  I pass by them all the time, but nobody ever throw out a piece from trimming.  It was my luck that someone ran over the stand of this small tree growing on the median of a street near my home.  The broken, uprooted tree lie there on the median for a few days.  I kept passing by it, looking at it, wondering why no one came to take it away... until I decided that it was waiting for me.  This piece was turned from the root ball of the victim tree.   I trimmed off all the protruding roots and turned it as if the cracks and voids and bark inclusions weren't there.  The wood is very pretty with it's yellowish green stripes--much like the Staghorn sumac--and also fluorescence under black light. This is definitely the most interesting domestic timber.  The figure is incredible, but the shimmering color mix is simple awesome! The poor tree was finally given a second life, as an article that will be cherished.  This footed bowl is truly special!
