This is a very cute mushroom threaded box made out of Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) with Betelnut (Areca catechu) cap.  Persimmon is a true ebony species, the only native American ebony.  It is heavy, hard and polishes well.  The timber is not all that common commercially.  The uniform wood works well as a mushroom stalk.  What's fun about this mushroom is the Betel nut cap.  The unique pattern looks so interesting as a mushroom cap.  I believe there is an edible species of mushroom with a cap similar to this.
