This is a very nice weed pot made out of Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). An evergreen conifer species native to western North America, Coast Douglas fir is currently the second tallest conifer in the world (after coast redwood). It is one of the world's best timber producers and yields more timber than any other tree in North America. The species is popular for ornamental planting and also as Christmas trees--perfect timber to showcase as this time of the year. An interesting local fact: the old Bay Bridge that connected Oaklands and San Francisco was supported by douglas fir trees as anchor rods, simply because it was the only thing that provided long enough poles for the purpose. The bridge was now replaced by a new $6.4 billion structure with high strength steel rods as supports, The reliability and durability of these state-of-the-art rods are still remain to be seen. Dougls fir dimensional lumber is kinda plain, but this particular weed pot was made from a trunk of discarded Christmas tree, decorated with bug holes, natural stains and branch knots for an interesting visual effect.
