This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Ponderosa Pine Burl (Pinus ponderosa) with Briar Burl (Erica arborea) cap. Ponderosa pine is is the official state tree of Montana. It is a magnificent species that holds the record for the tallest known pine. I was very fortunate to obtain a piece of it's very rare burl. When I hauled the burl out for cutting, I thought that there was definitely a mistake in labeling. Pine can not be this heavy! But when I cut into it, the fresh pine scent filled the whole workshop. Yes, it is pine alright, but guess what? The burly wood is saturated with pine resin! In fact, this wood is so dense that I can thread it directly instead of using a hardwood insert. There is more: the resulting acorn is translucent! I did not turn it very thin because I want the piece to hold it's wonderful aroma for a long time, but the translucency is still apparent. It is well known that some woods become translucent when impregnated with oil, Norfolk Island Pine is famous for that, but this all natural, with the added sniffing pleasure! Capped with another rare burl, one with a nice orange tint, this acorn is truly striking!

It is ready to dangle off your keychain, bag zipper, belt with the removable lobster claw. The nut is small enough to be worn as a pendant (without the claw). Good for small daily pills, keepsake...Not recommended for long term storage of emergency pill, since I don't know how air/water tight the closure is. Through the ages, people has given out acorns as a symbol of prosperity and luck. This one is a unique gift.
