This is a very special mushroom shaped box made out of Red-Tip Photinia (Photinea x fraseri). Traditional hedge shrub, Photinia is very popular in the American south and also here in this part of San Jose. This mushroom sprouted from an old, overgrown hedge tree that was removed by my neighbor. I always keep an eye out for this wood, heavy and dense like the expensive boxwood, but with a warmer tone. Whole oak branch is my favorite wood for turning mushrooms.  The radial rays of the oak mimics the gills of mushroom perfectly.
