This is a very pretty mushroom shaped box made out of French Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) with Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) cap.  Boxwood is a hard and heavy wood from a slow growing, small shrub.  It is the hardest and heaviest wood from the entire European continent.  The wood is often used to make chess piece due to its extremely fine grain.  Also a favorite wood for detail carving.  The cap is fashioned out of a small live oak branch.  Coast live oak is the local species here with very dense wood.  The radial rays of oak looks exactly like gills of mushroom, so make sure you turn this piece up-side-down and enjoy the patter.  A ring of bark was retained for contrast and accent.  I like this one!
