This is a very special mushroom shaped box made out of American Holly (Illex opaca) with Red Oak (Quercus rubra) cap.  It's mushroom season here now.  This one is the larger one I managed to grow from my lathe.  It's difficult to find such a big oak branch that can be dried with minimal splitting.  I highlight the few cracks by filling them with black resin, which adds character and a realistic look to the piece.  I like oak for mushroom cap.  The stalk is made from Holly wood.  The white, plain wood works well as a mushroom stalk.  What special about this mushroom is the oak cap.  The radial rays of oak mimics the gills of the mushroom perfectly.   This is one king-size saprophyte!
