This is a very pretty acorn shaped box made out of Black Oak Mistletoe Burl (Quercus kelloggii) with Black Walnut (Juglans negra) cap.  Black oak is a California native.  This species is special because it is the largest mountain oak in the West, and also decidous.  Comes Autumn, and stands of black oaks turn brilliant golden color.  I am sure that the most photographed group of black oaks is the one standing sentinel in El Capitan Meadow, Yosemite.   This species was utilized by Native Americans of California and Oregon for food, medicine, dyes, utensils, games, toys, and construction materials.  This piece of wood has a few eyes and areas of confused grains induced by the parasitic Mistletoes that like to piggy-back on its branches, an interesting effect not often seen. Coupled with the figured black walnut, also from California, this acorn is a true beauty!
