This is a very cute mushroom threaded box made out of Loquat Plum (Eriobotrya japonica) stalk and Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) cap. Also called Japanese Plum, Loquat is common here as ornamental tree. It has edible fruit that looks like fig and tastes like nothing else. This shrub does not look particularly woody, but the wood is surprisingly fine grain and heavy. What special about this mushroom is the oak cap. The radial rays of oak mimics the gills of the mushroom perfectly. A California native oak, this species has very dense wood. The problem is, live oak likes to twist and turn as it grows, so a nice section with centered pit is not common. Also, the wood tend to crack along the radial rays, all the way into the center when dried. I like to retain a ring of bark as accent, but bark also tends to fall off when dried too quickly. So, I have to baby these logs, dried them in a bag, open and close the bag repeatedly along the way. These are a few technical problems that make mushrooms a seasonal offering in my store.
This threaded box can be used to hold small valuables...The screw-on cap ensured that your content is secured; also serves as a unique gift for nature lovers.
