This is a very special mushroom shaped pendant box made out of American Holly (Ilex opaca) with Betelnut (areca catechu) cap. I like to experiment with palm nuts, specially those with the beautiful pattern. These natural materials are hard and dense, often referred to as vegetable ivory due to the similarity in properties. Only here in my shop, you can find several species of these nuts transform into threaded caps: acorn cap, box cap, and mushroom cap. This mushroom was made from the well known Betelnut. Betel nut is an important palm nut in SE Asia and Oceania cultures. It is chewed with betel leaves and lime for the mild stimulant effect; often offered as a sign of hospitality or friendship. The nut is also associated with legends and is a symbol for marital love. Holly, the whitest wood, serves perfectly as mushroom stalk.
So, here it is, a small mushroom with a secret compartment. Good for very small daily pills or memorial keepsake, tiny valuable. The screw-on cap ensures that your content is secured, yet can be easily accessed.
