This is a very special mushroom shaped box made out of
Dogwood (Cornus florida) with Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) cap. This is a new species of mushroom with interestingly named timber. Golden Rain got its name from its yellow panicles of flower and then seed pods. The cap is from salvaged timber of tree trimming around my place. I got two of these street trees in front of my house. This species is a resilient one. I have been battling unwanted seedlings from these trees every year. I was surprised to see that this species holds its bark well, so here it is another cute mushroom with the Dogwood as the stalk.
Nothing beats the beauty of mass blooming Dogwoods in early Spring, especially along the side of a flowing stream. What a sight to remember! Native to North Eastern US, Flowering Dogwood is the state tree of Missouri and Virginia. The wood has a nice pink tint with subtle coloration and is very hard and dense. Hard enough that it was used to make golf club, mallet and butcher block, among other things. Well, I think it looks best made into a mushroom like this one!
